In the world of fashion photography, passion and creativity intertwine to create captivating images that tell stories. We had the opportunity to sit down with Jet Lag a talented fashion photographer, friend and photo director at Klu to discuss his journey, inspiration, creative process, and future aspirations. Join us as we delve into the world of fashion behind the lense of Jet Lag.
How did you get started in fashion photography, and what inspired you to pursue it?
I started my photography journey at the young age of 14, capturing moments with a small camara my mom bought me, she was between buying me a camara or a cell phone, she thought it would be more productive to have a camara and I quickly realised my passion for capturing beauty through a camera lens. I began experimenting with photography alongside my friends from school, forming a production crew of 15 people. Despite facing challenges along the way, such as failed plans and setbacks, my passion for photography grew. I also used to do periodistic photography back then in Bogota, then I started studying at Photo Design, where I had the opportunity to start attending to Bogota Fashion Week, Colombia Moda and then meeting industry professionals that lead me to work with Latin Designers such as Faride Ramos, Beatriz Camacho, Pepa Pombo and celebrities such as Paulina Vega.
What is your creative process for planning and producing a fashion photoshoot?
My creative process revolves around connecting with my team. We bounce ideas off each other, recognizing that not everything has to be solely my vision. We brainstorm together, ensuring that each person’s input is valued. Collaboration is key to bringing out the best in our collective creative vision.
How do you ensure that your artistic vision is reflected in the photos you capture?
To me, it’s all about capturing the essence of the story through the model’s gaze. I strive to create images that convey a narrative and evoke emotions. I’m critical of the details, making sure every element contributes to the desired character and atmosphere.
How do you work with the creative team, including stylists and makeup artists, to align everyone’s vision for the project?
Maintaining a good vibe and professionalism is crucial when collaborating with the creative team. The power of music sets the mood and helps establish the desired atmosphere. We create an environment where everyone’s ideas and contributions are valued, fostering a cohesive vision throughout the project.
What is your approach to working with models and helping them feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera?
I believe in making the models feel like they are part of the team. That’s why I prefer working with a carefully selected team that makes everyone feel supported. Building connections and fostering a comfortable environment helps models shine in front of the camera.
How do you stay updated with trends and changes in the fashion industry?
While I value my individual artistic eye, I also draw inspiration from the works of fellow photographers and the unintentional influence of the European aesthetic. I believe that staying true to your vision and style is more important than solely following trends.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in fashion photography?
Don’t let the pressure to please clients or fit into a specific mold consume you. Approach your work objectively and strategically without sacrificing your passion. Building and nurturing connections, friendships, and respect for others will help you thrive. Stay true to yourself and focus on honing your craft rather than seeking validation from others.
What are your plans and future projects in the world of fashion photography?
I’m a firm believer in allowing things to unfold organically, without setting rigid expectations. I strive to continuously pursue my passion, delivering exceptional work and leaving a lasting impression. I aspire to venture into documentary photography again, capturing the essence of people’s lives and creating meaningful memories. Jet lag sessions and other creative endeavors are on the horizon, allowing me to further explore the boundaries of my artistry.
We invite you to follow @jet_lag__ and stay tuned to all our upcoming projects together!
